Case Results

Read about some of the results Jessica has gotten for her clients:

*Federal Appeal*

Jessica represented a client convicted of felon-in-possession of a firearm in federal court. The district court imposed a sentencing enhancement based on the client’s prior conviction for distributing drugs. Jessica argued on appeal that the enhancement was improper, and the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals agreed. As a result, the client received a significantly reduced sentence and other defendants were no longer eligible for that sentencing enhancement.

*28 U.S.C. § 2254*

Jessica represented a client convicted of drug trafficking in a Texas state court and sentenced to 99 years of imprisonment. Jessica took the case to federal court and argued that the evidence was insufficient to support the conviction. The federal judge ordered the client’s conviction overturned and the client was released from prison.

*28 U.S.C. § 2255*

Jessica represented a client sentenced to over 15 years of imprisonment under the Armed Career Criminal Act. Following the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in Johnson v. United States, 576 U.S. 591 (2015), Jessica argued that the client’s sentence was unconstitutional and could not stand. The Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ordered the client’s release from federal prison.

*Compassionate Release*

Jessica represented a client who was sentenced to life imprisonment for carjacking in the 1990s. Jessica argued that the client’s draconian sentence was the result of outdated sentencing laws and presented evidence that the client had a stellar prison record and deserved to be released from federal prison. The federal magistrate judge agreed and recommended that the client be released immediately.
